APSL Emergency Response Fund concludes its Covid-19 relief activities in Sri Lanka by providing assistance to 1650 families and nine key Hospitals.

The Association of Professional Sri Lankans in the UK (‘’APSL’’) launched an Emergency Relief Fund (“ERF”) on 25th March 2020 to support vulnerable people and deserving families in Sri Lanka as they started to face many hardships due to the Corona (Covid-19) pandemic. At the end of 7 weeks operation of the programme, APSL concluded its Covid-19 relief activities having provided Rs. 3.2 million worth of assistance to 1650 families all over Sri Lanka and to nine key Hospitals. By way of immediate relief, dry ration parcels were distributed to each family and the parcels contained following items.

• Rice 5kg
• Dhal 1kg
• Salmon/Mackerel 1 large or 2 small tins
• Noodles 500g
• Dry Fish 100g
• Big Onions 1 kg
• Chilli Powder 100g
• Curry Powder 100g
• Salt 1 packet
 
The dry ration distributions were carried out and completed successfully in three phases by helping 1650 families in 46 locations covering all 9 Provinces in Sri Lanka. Please see Map 1 below for further information. During 1st and 2nd phases of the programme, APSL helped a further 165 and 418 families respectively. In the 3rd phase, 1067 families received assistance in collaboration with Hela Sarana, a leading Sri Lankan Charity in the UK. Also, with the help of the Late Florence De Silva Memorial Fund of APSL, we distributed 120 special dry ration packs (worth of 2,000 Rupees including milk powder, Samaposha/ Threeposha and biscuits) focussing on families with young children during the 2nd and 3rd phases of the programme.

 

In addition to all of the above, APSL donated personal protective equipment (PPE) and other necessary equipment to nine key hospitals in Sri Lanka to support their front-line efforts to deal with Covid-19 related patient activities as noted below. Please see above Map 2 as to the hospitals that received assistance.

1. Three hundred (300) KN 95 respirator masks to the National Institute for Infectious Diseases (formally known as Infectious Disease Hospital – IDH), Angoda, in collaboration with Hela Sarana
2. Three hundred (300) KN 95 respirator masks to the Sri Lanka Navy General Hospital, Welisara in collaboration with Hela Sarana
3. Three hundred (300) KN 95 respirator masks to Apeksha Cancer Hospital, Maharagama in collaboration with Hela Sarana
4. Two hundred (200) KN 95 respirator masks to Sri Lanka Police General Hospital, Colombo in collaboration with Hela Sarana
5. One Hundred (100) KN 95 respirator masks to the Chilaw General Hospital in collaboration with Hela Sarana
6. One Hundred (100) KN 95 respirator masks to the Karapitiya General Hospital, Galle
7. Donated essential fully equipped (Cover-all) PPE kits for COVID-19 community screening to the Kalutara General Hospital.
8. Donated a much-needed washing machine to the Colombo South Teaching hospital, Kalubowilla
9. Donated essential re-usable PPE coveralls to the Divisional Hospital, Demodhara
 
Finally and importantly, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the front line key workers including the medical staff members, government officials, members of Tri-forces, Srilanka Police and Civil Security Forces for their indispensable contribution to the nation during this hour of need.
