Dear Member,

It is with great pleasure that I would like to introduce myself as the newly elected President of the Association of Professional Sri Lankans in the UK (APSL).  Myself and the new executive committee were appointed on 6th of May 2017 at the 13th Annual General Meeting held at the Citadines Hotel, Holborn, London.  Since then we have been working on preparing and finalising our plans focusing specifically on key projects/programs and deliverables to achieve the objectives of the organisation.

As a charity registered both in the UK and Sri Lanka, APSL has grown from strength to strength and today we have nearly five hundred members.  APSL Scholarship Scheme, Solar Village project, Young Professionals event, We Sri Lanka, Eastern Values and Living in the UK and Ask the Expert series are some of the key success stories of APSL. More information of these can be found under the projects area of the website.

Whilst continuing to support and expand the above projects, we are also exploring other opportunities for our members to participate and engage further with the activities of the organisation. Some of the future projects include;

  • Engagement and support for Sri Lankan students studying in the UK
  • Mentoring Scheme for University Students based in Sri Lanka
  • Knowledge Transfer and Capacity building project to help Sri Lanka
  • Launching an Enterprise Training Scheme

Further details of these projects and how you can get involved will be circulated to all member in due course. We would very much welcome your active participation by sending us any comments/ideas and proposals when you receive the above information.

APSL will be hosting its 13th annual fund-raising Dinner dance this year at the Grange Tower Bridge hotel in London on 23rd September 2017.  This annual event is dedicated to fund a worthy cause/project in Sri Lanka and last year we raised funds to build a solar village project in Sri Lanka, which was successfully completed at Nochchiya village in the Kurunegala district and handed over to the village development committee in January 2017.

The aim of this year’s fund-raising event is to provide much needed medicines and other support to Cancer Patients in Sri Lanka.  Patients with cancer and their families face both emotional and financial challenges, therefore we wish to donate all proceeds from this event to the needy patients currently undergoing treatments in Sri Lanka.

I shall kindly request all members to attend the dinner dance and assist us in supporting this worthy cause which would immensely help the needy cancer patients in Sri Lanka.

I look forward to receiving your continuous support and active participation in all future APSL activities.

Thanking you

Suraj Wijendra

President
